William Turnbull:
Centenary Retrospective

Offer Waterman, 2022

Summary

  • Published to mark the centenary of his birth, the book celebrates the artistic legacy of William Turnbull (1922–2012). One of Britain’s most important post-war Modernists, he explored through painting and sculpture the changing contemporary world and its ancient past, actively engaging with the shifting concerns of British, European and American artists such as Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.

  • Some of the key themes in Turnbull’s career – the human head, standing figures, the horse and the female figure – are examined through his powerful imagery.
